SUMMARY:Wild Water - The Maynard\, Grindleford
DESCRIPTION:Wild Water \nGaddings Dam is a reservoir hidden in the West Yorkshire moors 780 feet above sea level. The bleak but romantic landscape\, steeped in the poetry and prose of Ted Hughes and the Brontës\, is home to England’s highest beach. The small strip of sand acts as a magnet to a community of swimmers\, day-trippers\, walkers\, bikers and runners. \nThere is a rhythm as people come and go\, having made the twenty-minute trek up a broken footpath\, each drawn to the beauty as it changes with the seasons; always the same\, always different. Some hardened locals brave the wind\, rain and snow to wild swim all seasons for escape\, comradeship\, to keep the black dog at bay or just for the sheer thrill. As they hit the water\, all experience the same visceral hit\, taking away everything except the moment. \nTime stops\, and peace arrives. \nBut there is more to this place than just swimming; a whole ecosystem of activity circulates around the reservoir. There are the volunteers who maintain the footpaths in all weathers\, the pub landlord fighting to keep vehicles out of his carpark\, the farmer and whose cattle need rescuing\, the Gaddings Dam Preservation Society\, and the January Daily Dippers. \nDoors open 19:30 \nFilm starts 20:00

SUMMARY:Subterranean - The Maynard\, Grindleford
DESCRIPTION:Hope Valley Cinema presents: \nSubterranean \nFor adventurous thrill-seekers\, caving is hard to beat. Combining climbing\, diving\, wayfinding and overcoming claustrophobia\, it’s a unique skill set not for the faint of heart. \nTwo gritty teams of hobbyist explorers are on the cusp of discovering new territory. Katie Graham is an accountant by day who is obsessed with the Bisaro Anima cave in the Rocky Mountains\, and she is willing to risk it all to achieve a caving depth record that depends on a successful scuba dive. Further west on Vancouver Island is Franck Tuot\, who sacrifices weekends away from his young family with the goal of linking two tunnel systems that will mark the longest-known cave in Canada. \nRegardless of whether they are successful in their missions\, understanding their motivations and dedication is what makes their pursuits so compelling. Accessing the depths of the earth through muddy crawls\, tight squeezes\, and seemingly endless pits\, for these intrepid explorers\, there’s nowhere to go but down. \nDoors open 19:00 \nFilm starts 19:30 \nThere is a bar serving food and drink \nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmDsnszuuJ8&t=2s

SUMMARY:2024 Brit Rock Film Tour - The Maynard\, Grindleford
DESCRIPTION:The Brit Rock Film Tour 2024 will be screened at 19.30 at The Maynard in Grindleford on Tuesday Dec 3rd. \nIt has three of the best new climbing films from one of the UK’s top adventure filmmakers\, featuring some of the country’s most popular climbers. The 2024 tour delivers a stunning line-up of compelling stories from the vertical world in its strongest program to date. \nThe film line up will be: \nNOSE JOB 50 mins \nAlex Waterhouse and Billy Ridal are two recently retired competition climbers that attempt to apply their indoor skills to real rock in the most extra-ordinary fashion. With almost no traditional climbing experience and barely a multi-pitch climb between them\, our audacious duo set out to be the first Britons to make a free ascent of the world famous Nose on El Capitan\, Yosemite. The route was first climbed by Lynn HIll in 1993 and has sub-sequently only recieved eight ascents in 30 years. To say the odds were stacked against them would be an understatement comparable in size to the\nroute itself. Hold tight as the action packed movie tracks this most unlikely of journeys to success. Features contributions from Lynn Hill\, Hans Florine and Leo Houlding. \nCLIMBING BLIND II 35 mins \nFollowing on from our first film ‘Climbing Blind’ (2019) where we see blind climber Jesse Dufton and sight guide Molly Dufton ascend the iconic Old Man of Hoy\, this film picks up the story of Jesse’s incredible climbing career.\nBorn with a rare genetic disease; retinitis pigmentosa\, Jesse no longer receives any useful information from his eyes. Despite this Jesse’s climbing has continued to progress. As well as competing on the para-circuit and making first ascents in Morocco\, Jesse has managing to on- sight several E2’s. This season Jesse’ s ambition is set on a succesful on-sight of an E3 and chooses the infamous ‘El Matador’ rated 5.12d (E3/4) on the spell binding Devil’s Tower in Wyoming\, USA. What unfolds is one of the most remarkable feats of persistance and human endevour you will ever witness. As terrifying as it is inspiring; Jesse takes several leader falls on route to the summit in a gruling encounter of the blind kind. If advertisy in life presents an oportunity to grow then\nlook no further than our movie Climbing Blind II. \nFREJA’S BACK 25 mins \nAll-round climber Freja Shannon is back again for 2024. In the late alpine season of 2023 Freja took a serious fall on the committing North Face of the Droites in the French Alps resulting in a broken back. This film tell’s Freja’s story of initial horror and doubts to a full physical recovery. In Freja’s inimitable style and despite the physio’s prognosis\, Freja returns to walking and then climbing in an unusually short time frame. We follow the ups and downs of Freja’s rehabilitation\, go on a near calamatus ascent of The Forbes Arete (Aiguille du Chardonnet) which sets up the main objective in the Swiss Alps. Here Freja attempts an ascent of ‘Ave Ceasar’ an immaculate 7c trad route on the spectacular Petit Clocher du Portalet. Whilst physically recovered\, as the story transpires it seems the psycological aspects of such a traumatic event may take more time to heal.Total Running Time Approx 120mins \nTotal running time 180 mins including an interval \nThere will be a bar open from all evening serving drinks and food. The show will start at 19.30

SUMMARY:The Eagle With The Sunlit Eye - The Maynard\, Grindleford
DESCRIPTION:Hope Valley Cinema presents: \nThe Eagle With The Sunlit Eye \nDuration 92 mins \nThe White Tailed Eagle is one of the largest birds of prey on the planet. \nFor generations\, humans have struck an uneasy relationship with this apex predator. We persecuted it to extinction in Britain a century ago – and then the 1970s saw this greatest of eagles brought back to our wild edges. \nThe return of this apex predator sparked controversy\, as accusations of livestock killings quickly surfaced from Scotland’s rural community. Despite no record of predation in Norway\, and with an Irish reintroduction scheme ongoing\, in Scotland a war of words rages on over the future of this raptor. \nThis film dives unflinchingly into the conflict\, just as the fire burns white hot. Pulling back the curtain on the reintroduction process\, combining breathtaking visuals with heart stopping action\, and even turning the cameras onto the filmmakers themselves\, this epic documentary ultimately asks us – will we ever learn to live alongside the eagle with the sunlit eye? \nAnd what will we lose if we can’t? \nDoors open 19:00 \nFilm starts 19:30 \nThere is a bar serving food and drink
